Maison Sichel Sauternes - Only 8 bottles remain!
Product Code: 10121/12
This a classic Sauternes dessert wine. It's been bottled as a cleanskin from a famous Sauternes producer. It's delicious and if labelled as the chateau wine it would sell for much more. 375ml bottle.
Sometimes the best vineyards in Bordeaux release parcels of wine “under the radar.”
They are released as a kind of cleanskin through the negotiants (wine merchants) of Bordeaux. They are often from barrels that are lighter or less rich in style compared to the usual wine released from these grand cru producers. In some cases they could be from young vines less than 10 years old. In other cases they could be from vintages in "lighter years". These are wines to drink now rather than wines to keep for decades.
On a recent trip to France we were offered (and bought) some of these "secret wines". They are released at prices that are a fraction of the usual prices.
This wine is from one of the most famous producers in Bordeaux. Situated some 40 kilometers south east of Bordeaux, between the Garonne river and the Landes forest, this Sauternes vineyard produces what many wine experts and wine lovers believe to be, quite simply, one of the best sweet white wines in the world. The vineyard recently converted to organic production.

Winemaking techniques: Vines have an average age of 50 years. Harvesting is by hand and is done several times over several weeks as each bunch is ready to be harvested . Each time the pickers go through the vines, they take only the over-ripe or rotted grapes to get the maximum sugar and Botrytis character. Once in the winery, the grapes are pressed and fermented in stainless steel vats, in which the temperature is not allowed to exceed 22°C. Once the level of residual sugar has reached 70 to 80g/l, fermentation is stopped by the addition of SO2 and by lowering the temperature. The wines are then aged in oak for 10 to 12 months.
Our tasting notes: A classic Sauternes. It has a lovely freshness and minerality. Notes of honey, spices and tropical fruit on the nose and in the mouth. A very beautiful balance. The 2012 vintage is considered generally a lighter year than the usual Sauternes vintage so probably this wine won’t keep for decades like the main wine of the producer.
Cellar notes: Drinking beautifully now or age for 8 to 12 years.
