LAST 6 BOTTLES: A great value Sauternes from a small family producer. Try wine from one of the worlds greatest sweet wine regions at a sensible price. The "10 best list" in France named this in 10 best value Bordeaux wines.
Named by the "10 Best List" in France in July 2013 as one of the "Top 10 Best Value Bordeaux wines"! As usual we are looking for the best value and best quality wines and this one hits the target. From one of the best sites in Barsac/Sauternes an up and coming family producer.
Grapes: 80% Sémillon, 15% Sauvignon, 5% Muscadelle
Soil: A magnificent 20-hectare vineyard located by the Ciron river, where the microclimate is very favourable to the development of Botrytis. The soil is made of fine gravel on a sub-soil of cracked limestones
Wine-making: 100% harvested by hand over several passes through the vineyard to aheive optimal ripeness. Fermentation is conducted in small temperature-controlled tank. The wine is aged for 18 months in oak barrels of which 25% are renewed each year.
Our tasting notes: Nice golden colour. Intense aromas of dry fruit such as apricots and figs with soft spices. On the palate, the wine is very elegant and well-balanced. Crisp, mineral and clean botritys. A fantastic sweet wine!! 2007 was a difficult/patchy year for some red producers but was very good for the dessert wines of Sauternes/Barsac.
One of France's main wine guides Gilbert & Gaillard gave this wine 90/100 and described it as.. " Golden hue. Intense nose mingling dried fruit, citrus and exotic fruits (mango, pineapple). Abundant freshness on the palate tones down the concentration. Long-lasting aromas, simultaneously exotic, crisp and spicy. Interesting personality."
The great care conducted in the vineyard and winery, in addition to the traditional winemaking methods have enabled Chateau de Rolland to produce a full-bodied wine with complex flavours and a magnificient bouquet.
Cellaring potential: Enjoyable now while fresh but this will cellar for 10 years or more.
This is a small producer to follow!
