Legendary right bank merlot blend. Considered an up and coming chateau in an up and coming appellation.
The appellation of Côtes de Castillon is essentially an extension of St-Émilion. The vineyards of the hills (Côtes), are on the same limestone plateau as those of St Émilion and overlook the Right Bank of the Dordogne River. Oz Clarke describes it as a star region, with excellent wines at affordable prices.
Château d’Aiguilhe, an estate of nearly 110 hectares, (50 hectares of vines), belongs to the Counts of von Neipperberg.
Château d'Aiguilhe is an estate well worth visiting. The vast inner courtyard is flanked on one side by a plateau, and on the other by a small valley. This overlooks "l'aiguille", a French word meaning "needle", or rocky rise on which the château was built. The château was destroyed by fire in the early 20th century and then rebuilt. Imposing buildings from various periods and in different architectural styles surround the courtyard, and a new semi-underground cellar fits in discretely with the environment.
Region/Terroir: Bordeaux-Cotes de Castillon
Grapes: Merlot (80%), Cabernet Franc (20%).
Soil: Clay and limestone on limestone subsoil. The minerals in the clay-limestone soil account for a wine of both power and finesse in which the roundness of Merlot marries beautifully with the concentration and complexity of Cabernet Franc.
Alcohol: 14% VOL
Wine making: Grapes are harvested by hand into small crates to avoid bruising and are manually sorted before and after destemming. There is no crushing. The grapes are fed by gravity into wooden vats for cool pre-fermentation maceration. After fermentation the wine is run off using gravity into French oak barrels (60% new) and aged on lees for 18 months. There is no fining or filtering.
Cellaring potential: Although Château d'Aiguilhe has good ageing potential, it is enjoyable a few years after the vintage (decant beforehand).
Our Tasting notes: We think this wine is pretty special but maybe we should just quote Parker "Unquestionably a sleeper of the vintage, the opaque plum/ruby/purple-tinged 2008 d 'Aiguilhe reveals abundant notes of licorice, fruitcake, black currants and kirsch, sweet tannin, a round, generous texture and impressive purity as well as length. It should be enjoyed over the next 6-8 years. 90 points"~(Wine Advocate)
