Chateau Rollan de By 2012
Product Code: 10055/12
Cru Borgeois Bordeaux at its best. We think this is wine with a WOW factor. Currently being served on Air France A380 Buisness Class. Recently out-ranked Chateau Margaux and Chateau Cheval Blanc in a blind tasting.
Jean Guyon is the owner of Château Rollan de By. He has taken all the necessary financial and human steps to make Rollan de By a reference point in this appellation. Twenty years ago, when he purchased this domain, he launched a daring initiative to improve quality and extended the vineyard. Traditional vine growing systems were adopted. Vines were replanted and natural fertilizers used to support the recovery of the natural ecosystem. On an impressive deep soil of gravel, Jean Guyon produces wines that were every bit as good as the classified-growths. The vines on the 45 hectare vineyard have an average age of 35 years.
Winemakers Alain Raynaud and master Italian winemaker Riccardo Cotarella advise Jean Guyon. While unusual for the French to be advised by an Italian winemaker, is not as strange as it seems as the Cotarella family estate in Lazio, Falesco, is famed for its 100% Merlot wine, Montiano. Berry Brothers in London describe this Chateau as "a very reliable source of good value Medoc"
Recently this wine outranked Chateau Margaux and Chateau Cheval Blanc in a blind tasting.
Region/Terroir: Médoc –Cru bourgeois

Wine making: Grapes picked by hand. Fermentation occurs at low temperatures in stainless steel, temperature controlled vats. Malolactic fermentation occurs partially in new oak barrels. The wine is aged in oak for 16 months.
Cellaring potential: A wine that will achieve full maturity a decade from the vintage, but which enjoys such balance that it can be enjoyed in its youth. Suggested drinking from 2018.
Our Tasting notes: This wine had a WOW factor in a large line up of wines from the Médoc. Lifted nose with some floral (violet) notes. Gorgeous mouth feel, round and long with great balance. Complex, blackcurrants and tobacco. As good as many classified growths.
Wine Enthusiast - 90 points - "Big, firm tannins dominate this structured wine. New wood aging shows, giving a very dry feeling. It's also rich and full in the mouth, packed with ripe black plum and berry flavors. It's going to balance well and richly. Drink from 2018." - tasted January 2015
Master of Wine, Jeannie Cho Lee - "Well made Medoc red with good intensity and concentration of cassis and blackberries in this challenging vintage. Many of its neighbours wines are either dilute or green and tannic but here, the tannins are supple and firm with good intensity of flavours in the mid palate. Tasted in: Bordeaux, France. Maturity: Young." Tasted April 2013
The restaurants in France serving this wine are a veritable who’s who of famous restaurants. It is a great pleasure to bring this wine to Australia.
