Product Description

Sainte-Croix-du-Mont is a small appellation, which faces Sauternes and Barsac, where the Garonne and Ciron rivers meet.  It has an unusual and exceptional terroir, based on a plateau comprised of vast fossilised oyster beds.  The 460 hectares of vineyards lie on the sometimes steep hillsides with their massive out-croppings of pure limestone.  The grapes are affected by botrytis cinera (noble rot) ripening slowly in autumn.  The wines are fresher and livelier than the Sauternes and Barsacs from across the river.

This wine was recommended by Jean Luc Pouteau (Jean Luc Pouteau was awarded Best Sommelier in France in 1976 and Best Sommelier in the World in 1983. Between 1984 and 1987 he was sommelier of the “Pavillon Élysée” and “Lenotre” in Paris).

Region/Terroir:  Sainte-Croix-du-Mont

Grapes:  Semillon (90%), Sauvignon Blanc (10%).

Soil:  Clayey Calcareous.

Alcohol: 13% VOL

Wine making:  Manual harvesting with successive selective pickings, from around the end of September, to the beginning of October. Traditional wine making methods are followed and the wine is aged in barrels.

Cellaring potential:  This wine will develop over several years – but why wait, it’s delicious now!

Our Tasting notes: Clear golden colour, with a complex nose of honey and crystallized fruits, peach and apricot, quince and marmalade.  Fleshy unctuous palate that is harmonious and velvety.  Not high in residual sugar, good balance and length.

Best served chilled at 8°C.

The same blend as Château d’Yquem, made by a winemaker taught by the best in Sauternes.  This wine is from an appellation just across the river.  Must be tasted to be believed!
