A great Malbec/Cahors from a top organic producer. This winery was mentioned in a review of Cahors in Decanter magazine in 2014 as an up and coming producer. Wine Enthusiast magazine has hailed Haut Monplaisir as "one of the world's greatest producers of Malbec." 93 points Wine Enthusiast and in their top 100 for 2016.
"Cahors is that rarest of all wines: both a rising star and a timeless classic." The Guardian April 2013.
Since the popularisation of Argentinian malbec, there has been increasing attention on the malbecs made in the birthplace of malbe; Cahors in south-west France.
Château Haut-Monplaisir is owned by Cathy and Daniel Fournié. Cathy took over from her parents in the 1990s and adopted organic practices. These approaches have lead to impressive improvements in the wines from the property. They are now certified organic producers. The vineyards are ideally located on the 3rd level terrasses of the Cahors region. The average age of the vines is 20 years.
Grapes : Malbec (100%)
Alcohol: 13% VOL
Wine making: A vintage with exceptional weather. Plentiful rain in spring resulted in difficult flowering and lowered yields. The weather conditions required the producers to remain alert to successfully combat mildew in what was their first vintage of certified organic grape production (after three years of conversion to organic farming). The deep rooting of the vines, together with a hot and dry summer finally produced grapes of excellent ripeness. A great amount of work done in the vineyards during the end of August and the beginning of September (leaf thinning and removal of sun burned berries) allowed the harvest healthy and juicy grapes.
Grapes were selected by hand at harvest. Vinification occured in cement temperature controlled tanks (27-28°C). Full de-stemming, crushing and pigeage (punching down of the cap) preceded maceration of 25 to 30 days. The wine was aged for 20 months in oak barrels: ⅓ new, ⅓ second wine, ⅓ third wine. The wine is not filtered.
Cellaring Potential: Already hitting its straps but could be kept for several years.
Our Tasting notes:
Deep garnet red almost black colour. The nose is intense, with notes of red fruits, plums, spices and blackberry jam. Very fresh on the palate with a nice roundness, crispy tannins and well-integrated oak. After decanting, it becomes more opulent and complex, adding some candied fruits and sweet spices like cinnamon and star anise to its bouquet. A wine that will honour your table and your cellar for several years.
Craig's comment. " Power, intensity and purity of fruit but great tannin/acid structure and balance. Perhaps the best vintage yet from this producer? Great to see the years of hardwork of the Fournié family coming to fruition. Excellent french malbec and organic to boot!"
The Prestige has several awards worth mentioning:
- Guide de la RVF : 15/20 et "Coup de Coeur" ( literally means a blow to the heart or "our favourite")
- Wine Enthusiast:93 points (and "Editor's choice") "This is a powerful wine, full of dark fruits and dense dry tannins. Even at four years old, it is still young. It is impressive in its concentration with fine acidity and black-plum flavors mingling with the tannins."
