We were thrilled to secure more stock of this excellent wine. One of the crowd favorites at Gauchito Gil Malbec event in Melbourne on Malbec World Day 2015. A great Malbec/Cahors from a top organic producer. This wine was mentioned in a review of Cahors in Decanter October 2014 as an up and coming producer. 90 points Wine Enthusiast July 2015. And well liked by our colleagues the Winewankers!
"Cahors is that rarest of all wines: both a rising star and a timeless classic." The Guardian April 2013.
Awarded 91 points in the Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine article on South West France (blind tasting - April/May 2016 issue).
Château Haut-Monplaisir is owned by Cathy and Daniel Fournié. Cathy took over from her parents in the 1990s and adopted organic practices. These approaches have lead to impressive improvements in the wines from the property. They are now certified organic producers.
Grapes : Malbec (100%)
Alcohol: 13% VOL
Wine making: Grapes are selected by hand at harvest. Vinification occurs in cement temperature controlled tanks (27-28°C). Full de-stemming, crushing and pigeage (punching down of the cap) precedes maceration of 25 to 30 days. The wine is aged for 20 months in oak barrels: ⅓ new, ⅓ second wine, ⅓ third wine. The wine is not filtered.
Cellaring Potential: Already hitting its straps but could be kept for several years.
Our Tasting notes: Garnet red colour. The nose is intense, with notes of red fruit, spices and blackberry jam. Crisp and even, this wine presents aromas of blackcurrant and blackberry on the palate, along with a mineral note. The finish is lengthy and complex, with notes of chocolate and spices, and with just a hint of woody aromas.
The Prestige has several awards worth mentioning:
- A star in the French wine bible, ‘Le Guide Hachette’.
- A ranking of 15/20 in the French ‘Le guide de la RVF’.
- 90 points from the American magazine ‘Wine Enthusiast’.
- Three $$$ from Robert Parker: The World's Best Wine Valued Under $25.
Here is the 90 point rating from Wine Enthusiast: "Lightly perfumed, the wine then shows elegant concentration. It has ripe vibrant fruit, but this is rounded by the finely judged wood. Over the fruit there is a suave layer of wood, giving a wine that has aging potential." Chateau Haut-Monplasir was hailed as "one of the best producers in Cahors"
